Based on the Central Place Theory, this paper compares the performance of the 14 metropolitan cities, established with the Delrio Law, to the rest of the country, to understand whether these cities are significantly different from the rest of the country in terms of their positioning in the urban hierarchy. Results suggest that the criteria for the implementation of the law did not give identify an internally coherent group of cities in terms of relative positioning and performance within the Italian urban hierarchy.
Keywords: metropolitan cities; Central Place Theory; Delrio law; reform of local; boards; urban hierarchy.
