In the last decades, the so-called urban food policies (UFP), which aim to reduce environmental impacts and increase the socio-spatial justice of food systems, have assumed a growing role in the urban sustainability debate. According to some scholars, these policies constitute an area of great potential for urban climate governance, thanks to the possibility of addressing the food consumption of urban populations, among the main environmental impacts on a global scale. However, critical reflections focus on the real capacity of localized actions and policies to structurally modify complex food systems. This contribution questions the possible role of UFPs in the framework of urban climate governance, starting from the analysis of the cities included in the Italian Network for Local Food Policies and with two case studies in Roma and Milano.
