The article, through a focus on the case of North African collectivities, presents an analysis of the transnational perspective’s application within migration studies carried out in the Italian context since 2000. The work starts from the analysis of the transnational literature on North African collectivities in Italy and then, using pub-lic and private databases, delves into the characteristics of the Egyptian and Tunisian migration flows, which appeared significant to understand the positioning of the research towards different foreign collectivities. The article thus outlines the peculiarities of the empirical application of the trans-national perspective in the Italian context. In particular, it is possible to present the material limits linked to the production of knowledge, with important methodological consequences such as the scant construction of multi-sited ethnographies, and the inherent limits in the gaze of researchers, that seem to work towards a quest for collectivities and fields significantly marked by a (perceived) otherness.
