The article addresses a topic that is still little researched in the literature but is increasingly important in practice: the university’s role as a "social inno- vator". Indeed, the university is today called upon to play a direct and proactive social role as an urban actor and to be an essential lever for the most fragile and struggling territories. This placing of the university at the service is investi- gated through some action-research experiences, mainly through the AuroraLAB project in Turin.
Keywords: social innovation; neighbourhoods; university; action-research; third mission.
