Still in the midst of the 19th century, there was a need to resort to an ancient and effective symbol that would evoke the sacredness of the person of the sovereign, reinterpreted in Italy in a secular and national key. The definition of the crown of the new kingdom, a visual state-building element, was not straightforward, gradually reflecting the po-litical tensions of the moment. It remained a symbol detached from objective reality, existing only in the iconography and heraldry of the sovereign or the state: a virtual representation, the effectiveness of which had been tested by the Savoy princes in their centuries-long quest for royalty.
Keywords: Monarchy, Nation, State-building, Heraldry, Iconography.
