The protection of the environment was a topic for a trade union conference in 1972. In the 1990-ies, works councils in the chemical industry concluded collective agreements to prevent grave accidents. In 2001, the protection of the environment was legally recognized as a field of action for works councils, but no codetermination rights were given to them. In present times the cultural gap between environmentalists and trade unions has decreased a lot; some common actions happened. Unions are legally entitled to conclude collective agreements in order to reduce CO2-emissions. The concept of Ecological Social Governance (ESG) can be used by workers representatives. Only in exceptional cases like in the coal or the nuclear industry workplaces are at stake.
Keywords: Trade unions; Works councils; Protection of the environment; Ecological Social Governance; Collective agreements to protect the environment.
