Life and work of Luigi Pagliarani (1922-2001) through the papers of his archive kept at the Documentation and Research Centre of the Mendrisio OSC. Luigi (Gino) Pagliarani (Rimini, 1922-Sorengo, Switzerland, 2001) was a prominent figure in psy-chological research in Italy in the second half of the 20th century. He is considered the founding father of psychosocioanalysis, a discipline aimed at understanding uncon-scious and conflicting aspects in the development of individuals, groups, and society. This research project aims to reconstruct the biographical events of Luigi Pagliarani, believing that they played a decisive role in the genesis of his scientific interests. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to examine many unpublished documents of considera-ble historical value preserved in the Luigi Pagliarani Archive, now located within the “Documentation and Research Center” of the psychiatric clinic in Mendrisio (Switzer-land). The different periods of Pagliarani’s life, brought to light through in-depth philo-logical work, will converge into a reasoned, human, and intellectual biography that re-flects and expresses the Archive. The biography will engage with a set of images and a small digital catalog of the most significant documents. The life of the psychologist from Rimini was, in many respects, extraordinary: the son of an anti-fascist persecuted during Italy’s fascist period, in 1943, Pagliarani was deported to a Lager in Germany. Upon his return to Italy, he, along with the psychoanalyst Franco Fornari, conducted pioneer-ing research on the psychology of atomic warfare and met the Swiss psychoanalyst Ma-ria Zanetta, who later became his wife. It is also worth mentioning his friendship with Federico Fellini and the journalist Sergio Zavoli. The result of this research project con-stitutes a novelty in the field of the history of psychology studies and highlights the great potential of an Archive that has never been systematically studied. Furthermore, this project contributes to the understanding of a personality that had profound human and professional ties to the Italian-speaking Switzerland.
