Hubert Jedin’s book collection and papers are held at the Library of the Fondazione Bruno Kessler in Trento, Italy. This essay looks at the role Jedin played in the first years of the Italian-German Historical Institute (Istituto Storico Italo-Germanico) and at how his bequest came to be acquired by the institution; in doing so, it also shows the importance of “modern special collections” for researching twentieth- century historiography. As the material preserved is extremely varied, it is possible to reconstruct Jedin’s international scientific network and his working method. The second part of the article analyses an unpublished manuscript from the historian’s papers, which sheds light on his research into St. Charles Borromeo’s library, his interest in cultural and book history, and his relationship with Paolo Prodi in the 1960s.

Keywords: Hubert Jedin; Carlo Borromeo; Paolo Prodi; modern special collections; historiography.
