During the 18th century, after many efforts, the presence of Orthodox faith in Livorno was officially recognized. Initially, Greek Orthodox Christians were simply tolerated, but in 1757 they obtained the right to build a church, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, even if outwardly it was not recognizable as a place of worship. Only in the Seventies, after having bought a burial place outside the walls, Greek Orthodox Christians who had settled in Livorno succeeded in gaining permission to openly show the signs of their rite in the public space of the city. The article analyses this emancipation process, and provides new evidence regarding the location and the structure of the church and cemetery, focusing on how Orthodox Christians managed to obtain them.
Keywords: Greek Orthodox Christians, 18th Century, Livorno, Jurisdictionalism, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.
