The aim of this article is to show how the birth and evolution of the BBC foreign services is strongly connected to geo-politics. It also intends to demonstrate how listeners of the BBC Italian Service felt part of a global community of ordinary people who shared similar lives and political views. After defining what transnationalism means, both old and new historiography on the BBC is reviewed to underline how approaches to the study of the corporation have changed over the decades. In the second part of the article, the papers of the broadcaster Elio Nissim will be analyzed as a case study to explain how the BBC managed to exert its soft power on both Italian broadcasters and listeners while concurrently carrying out its propaganda.
