Starting with the meeting between De Gasperi and Einaudi in 1944, the arti-cle traces some moments in the partnership between the two statesmen who, despite coming from different cultures, had developed a deep convergence on the strategic choices of the new Italy. This partnership was cemented in par-ticular by the first founding acts in the process of European integration (from the Ecsc to the proposal for a European army). The author highlights how the recommendations of President Einaudi, contained in notes published po-sthumously in the volume Lo scrittoio del presidente, had a direct influence on the choices and orientations of the Italian government.
