This essay investigates the editorial strategies and cultural influences that underpinned the formative years of the Giornale de’ letterati di Roma (1668–1674). Based on the unpublished correspondence of the editor, this paper examines the first years of the Giornale de’ letterati di Roma (16681674) through the perspective of its primary architect, le roman literate Michelangelo Ricci. It maps Ricci’s cultural interests and explores his networks. In doing so, it evaluates his editorial direction and explores the enduring tension between print and manuscript cultures in the late Seventeenth century. Situated at the intersection of public and private spheres, Ricci’s role makes possible to reconstruct his cultural identity while offering significant insights into the relationships with the public domain—a phenomenon recently explored by historiography concerning the Eighteenth and Nineteenth centuries, but which remains elusive regarding the Baroque era and the broader circulation of information throughout the Seventeen century.
