Gadamer and Metaphysics - Gadamer’s thought is not often associated with that of metaphysics. Since it presents a hermeneutics of our historical condition, one could even suspect that it would have to be qualified as post-metaphysical, especially in the light of the fact that many important readers like Rorty and Vattimo understood his hermeneutics as such. But a close reading of his work reveals that Gadamer does not hesitate to situate, albeit discretely, his thinking in the continuity of the metaphysical tradition. This paper examines on what grounds he can claim this and can resist the post-metaphysical or postmodern conclusions of some of his relativistic followers. Particularly enlightening in this regard is Gadamer’s contention that his hermeneutics of language renews the medieval and metaphysical doctrine of the belongingness of our language to Being. It helps explain his resistance to Heidegger’s idea of a language of metaphysics as well as to Derrida’s deconstruction of metaphysics.;
