The Design International series was launched in 2017 as a place for cultural exchange between the different design souls. Over the years, the series has consolidated its position as a point of reference for international research, outlining a continuously updated research map.
The Scientific Committee, consisting of experts in fashion, interiors, graphics, communication, product, service, social interaction, innovation and emotional design guarantees the level of the accepted texts. The Editorial Board, consisting of young experts in the different branches of design, supports the work of the scientific committee. After an initial evaluation by the two committees, the texts undergo international double revision.

Generative AI in the Design Process

A Journey through Image Generation for Concept Ideation

This book explores the role of generative AI—particularly text-to-image tools like Midjourney—in the early stages of the product design process. The research aims to examine how these tools can support the conceptual phase of industrial design by fostering inspiration, accelerating ideation, and enabling new forms of creative collaboration.

From Human-centered to More-than-Human Design

Exploring the transition

The environmental emergency of the last century has led to an urgent need to reformulate the predominant role of human beings on the planet by undertaking a less anthropocentric design approach. Within this theoretical framework, the book explores the role of Design as a multifaceted discipline capable of exploring the complexity of a changing world, and reconsiders the human being’s position in a pervasive relationship with the contemporary environments through a More-than-Human approach.

Food procurement and short food value chains

An analysis of case studies in public and private realms

The PPP-URB project is a key initiative within the Onfoods PNRR research program, aimed at reimagining urban food systems. The project investigates the role of food ecosystems in small territorial units, with a particular focus on university campuses, to understand their influence on local systems.

Food Design for the Real World

Design by and for food: place-based innovation and transformative design

This book explores the transformative potential of design within agri-food systems. Inspired by Victor Papanek’s call to address real human needs, the book adopts a transdisciplinary and situated approach to investigate food as both a medium and an object of design.
Blending theory and practice, it traces the evolution of the food design field and introduces a six-mediation framework for understanding food experience.

Extended Store

How digitalization effects the retail space design

Extended store has been a work of mapping the phenomena of digitalization that effects spaces and above all the world of retail. Shops will not disappear in the 21st century, but they will have to change (if they have not already done so) to survive. They will have to evolve by integrating technological solutions that are not only back-end (as they have done so far), but front-end, and therefore available to customers in the shop as in the cases reported in the book.

Evolving Perspectives in Product Design

From Mass Production to Social Awareness

In a time when profound sociocultural and technological changes are affecting the design discipline, this book presents a number of consolidated and emerging issues in product design under four dominant perspectives: technical, human, digital and social. Different perspectives underlying modifications and adaptations of the design concept, together with the fixed elements that have characterized product design since its inception during the Industrial Revolution, are the subjects of analysis and discussion in the present book.

Evolving matter

The future of materials and design in the biofabrication era

Biofabrication is giving us the chance to act a radical change of frame and rethink the way we produce and consume, and more generally the way we live and relate to the Earth habitat through our behaviours – strongly entangled with and influenced by materials, resources and processes we use. The volume aims to provide an insight into how design should approach the transdisciplinary field of biofabrication in order to play an active part in such material revolution, acting on multiple scales and shifting from micro to macro to connect the dots.

Engaging Spaces

How to increase social awareness and human wellbeing through experience design

The book presents different perspectives of analysis and new models of experience, reconfirming the importance assigned to the wellbeing and human-centered approach in the contemporary spatial design disciplinary debate. The aim is to explore the transformation process which we are living, both in private and in public spaces, underlining the central role of design to define new qualities of connections to live together in relation with the space around us.

Emerging Materials & Technologies

New approaches in Design Teaching Methods on four exemplified areas

The book focuses on four exemplified EM&Ts areas as results of the methods, gaps and issues related to their teaching methods. The four areas are: Experimental Wood-Based EM&Ts, Interactive Connected Smart (ICS) Materials Wearable-based, Carbon-based & Nanotech EM&Ts and Advanced Growing. It provides the setting up of a common/ novel method to teaching EM&Ts: to create new professional in young students, and to develop new guidelines and approach.
