Professional identity of pedagogical legal officer has been affected by transformations occurred over time in the culture of penal and penitentiary system. The transition towards a "re-educating" penitentiary system in the second post-war period highlighted a new identity, a new role that are not always accompanied by new awareness and educational practices. The paper intends to redefine the identity of the role pedagogical legal officer has within the professions working in the education and training domains. Elements of representations by the organizational actors as well as identity perspectives are used for this purpose. They both are analysed in relation to the way every prison institution makes sense of the work contents of the pedagogical legal officer thanks to the devices in use and to the way it nourishes the culture of educational role in prison. Lastly the pedagogical legal officer is seen as the "expert of the re-educational treatment" in relation to his/her ability to manage his/her job in the educational perspective and the ability to construct the sense of his/her professional role autonomously.
