The Mediterranean cities of Cagliari (Italy) and Alicante (Spain) are historical settlements with a long tradition of ports and share many cultural, economic, social and urbanistic characteristics. Port systems lie at the heart of political interests and strategies, technological development, migration, the movement of goods and people, and are heavily influenced by market transformations and spatial modifications, which are often radical. This also involves changes to the morphology of port cities and their surrounding areas, which are dynamic, cosmopolitan and open to change by their very nature. This article aims to identify common urban features, both historical and contemporary, through a comparative study of the urban evolution of the two cities over the centuries. Based on an analysis of surviving graphic and written documentation, the study reveals interesting insights into the current urban morphology of these cities and their approach to urban projects at the interface with the sea.
This article examines the history of the text published in 1636 as De gentilismo non retinendo and argues for referencing it by the title assigned to it in its second edition a year later. This choice not only honours Campanella’s ultimate preference but also more accurately captures the text’s role as a prolegomenon to his comprehensive encyclopaedic project aimed at a general reform of knowledge. Through a nuanced analysis of the Prologus, the article foregrounds key parts that have often been overshadowed in scholarship by its more explicitly anti-Aristotelian contents, and highlights Campanella’s fundamental rejection of dogmatism as a necessary prerequisite for philosophical inquiry. This strong stance, quintessential to Campanella’s intellectual legacy, represents both a distillation of his metaphilosophical approach and the foundational framework for the universal reform he envisaged as extending beyond philosophy into other realms such as religion and politics.
Elaborating on qualitative in-depth interviews with performing artists collected in Milan, the article expands on networking practices and emotional labour in entrepreneurial and precarious working environments. The study reflects on how networking narratives and emotional dispositions are adopted, reproduced and contested in a highly fragmented labour context. Looking at actors’ experiences, the study let emerge how instances of resistance to self-promotional logics are present together with the reproduction of dominant narratives of cheerful sociability that permeate the field of cultural and creative work. In this context, the notion of emotional labour on the one hand sheds light on the emotional aspects related to performing artists’ work that take shape off the stage and, on the other hand, is interconnected with experiences of precariousness and entrepreneurship.
A crucial aspect of the Chinese presence in Africa is the employment of transnational Chinese workers in the growing number of Chinese public and private enterprises. This paper stems from dissatisfaction with the rift between studies of Chinese workers in Africa, studies of Chinese state-sponsored globalization, and recent conceptualizations of transnational labor mobility. This rift has prevented the foregrounding of the simultaneous and co-produced movement of capital, firms, machinery and workers from China to Africa within Chinese government’s globalization strategies. I address this gap by bringing different literatures and approaches into dialogue. I engage in theoretical debates. I ruffle prevailing conceptualizations of transnational labor mobility in relation to capital mobility and methodological approaches that focus solely on receiving states. My central argument is that the mobility of workers from China to Africa should be discussed as a new mobility pattern.
