L'epurazione dei giornalisti nel secondo dopoguerra (1944-1946)

The Journalists’ Purge in the Second Afterwar (1944-1946) - During 1945, both the High Commission for Sanctions against Fascism and the Committee for the review of Rome journalists’ register, chaired by Mario Vinciguerra, carried out an intense activity to purge the journalists linked to the fascist regime. Hundreds of inquiries were conducted in that year, and 380 journalists (almost a quarter of the members of Rome’s register) were denounced to the purging Committee. Even though there were journalists who could defend themselves successfully against the accusations, dozens were punished with the exclusion from their profession, and to defend this activity the Italian government introduced a law to punish editors and publishers who employed purged journalists in their newspapers, a measure directly requested by the Italian National Press Federation (Fnsi). However, the good job done by the High Commission and by the Vinciguerra Committee was at the end cancelled out by the clemency measures adopted in 1946 to promote the country’s reconstruction, which allowed the purged journalists to be readmitted in their profession.
