The paper tries to find interconnections between demographic decline and urban socioeconomic development. We explore the case of Genoa where ageing is connected to an historical demographic pattern and it has been just revealed and not caused by the collapse of historic industry and the end of internal migrations. Urban regeneration policies have not been responsible for the little demographic recovery which can be entirely attributed to the new international migration wave, mostly employed in elderly’s care market. Dependence of Genoa’s demographic rate from foreign migrants rises crucial issues about integration.
