This essay’s main aim is to describe Aldo Moro’s political leadership during his stint as secretary of the Christian Democratic Party in 1959-1964. The objective though is not only to describe the path of his construction of the centre-left alliance for the government, but also to investigate the way in which Moro led the party to reach this goal. The essay’s focus is on Moro’s effort to turn some apparent weaknesses of the Christian Democratic Party into strengths to pursue his political project. The author underlines particularly Moro’s idea to present himself as the only party candidate who could represent all the differences inside the Dc, and also the great attention he paid to political propaganda, to legislative control and government policies. An important section of the essay is dedicated to the peculiar relationship between the Christian Democratic Party and the Catholic Hierarchy. The essays shows how Moro’s leadership is marked by a strong activism also in this case, with a specific intent of turning the relationship with the Vatican upside down by showing the Catholic Hierarchy the risks implied in the possible end of the catholic political unity.
