The psychosocial intervention carried out in the area hit by the 2009 earthquake was the biggest emergency action ever implemented in Europe, and it marked an important change for Italian emergency psychology. The author retraces the phases of the intervention in order to highlight the importance of group work in every phase and action, to point out its critical aspects and underline the importance of specific training. He describes the organization of the Environmental Services, which is a complex "system of systems" that coordinates the activities of all the involved groups and associations, and includes psychological support to the people hit by catastrophic events.
Keywords: Environmental services, emergency psychology, coordination, group work, specific training, collective trauma
