Moving from the special issue that the journal Studi storici has recently dedicated to the contemporary historiography of Fascism, the essay aims at a comprehensive reflection about the current state-of-the-art in this field. A profound difference between the Italian scholarly debate and the international one results from this analysis. It also comes out that the stronger the image of Fascism is portrayed, the less coherent it appears in the different interpretations given by historians. At the same time, it seems that historians have been able to resolve the traditional disputes about Renzo De Felice’s interpretations, although some of the old schemes, as well as a certain intransigence typical of the past still influence part of the new generation of historians.
