The article analyses the arrangements and the role of the independent fiscal institutions in the multilevel economic governance, with a special focus on the Italian Parliamentary Budget Office. It investigates the problems these authorities face for what concerns the independence and the effectiveness of their functions vis-à-vis the democratic procedures underpinning budgetary decisions.
